Flood Protection
High River is a provincial leader in flood mitigation — and preparedness remains a shared responsibility.
How we're protected
Following the 2013 flood, the Town and province built one of Canada's most comprehensive flood mitigation systems: dikes and flood walls along the Highwood River, the Little Bow canal upgrades, and upgraded stormwater capacity through the SWAMP (Southwest Mitigation) channel.
Know your role
- Sign up for emergency alerts and follow the Town's official channels
- Know whether you're in a flood fringe or floodway area
- Prepare a 72-hour household kit and an evacuation plan
- During high water, respect closures on the berm and pathways
During an emergency: this website switches to emergency presentation, and information moves to the emergency information page. Follow instructions from officials; call 911 for life-safety emergencies.
